Players in bold face are active as of the 2022 Major League Baseball season , with the number in parenthesis designating the number of home runs they have hit during the 2022 season. The last change in the cutoff for the top 300 occurred on September 11, 2022, when Eugenio Suarez hit his 223rd career home run, displacing Jason Bay and Don Mattingly. Of the three hitters in MLB history with more than 700 home runs, two -- Aaron and Ruth -- primarily played right field. Ruth was the all-time home run king from 1920 until '74, when Aaron passed him with his 715th career homer. Aaron ended up with 755 long balls and held the career record until Bonds surpassed his total in 2007.
Meanwhile, several players are first at their position with fewer than 450 homers. As you can see above, we have each MLB team’s postseason home run king. We will eventually build out leaderboards for each squad, similar to what we’ve done for single-season and career home run leaders. First, it was the NLCS and ALCS before the Division Series was added in each league. Then came the wild-card era, both in 1995 and 2012, when the second wild card became official.

That said, the leader in home runs while actually playing right field isn’t Hammerin' Hank or the Great Bambino, but rather Sammy Sosa with 538. Aaron had 520 homers as a right fielder, 68 as a left fielder, 64 as a center fielder, 61 as a first baseman, 22 as a DH, six as a second baseman and three as a pinch-hitter. In addition to holding the record for the longest consecutive games played streak at 2,632, Ripken is a member of the 3,000-hit club and had 431 home runs in his 21-year career.

Although he moved to third base in 1997, the Iron Man played over three-quarters of his games at shortstop and is well ahead of the next-closest player for the positional home run lead. An automatic home run is achieved by hitting the ball on the fly over the outfield fence in fair territory. More rarely, an inside-the-park home run occurs when the hitter reaches home plate while the baseball remains in play on the field. In Major League Baseball , a player in each league wins the home run title each season by hitting the most home runs that year. Only home runs hit in a particular league count towards that league's seasonal lead. Mark McGwire, for example, hit 58 home runs in 1997, more than any other player that year.

The list on this page is compiled from Baseball-Reference, which credits RBIs from 1907 to 1919 as recorded by baseball writer and historian Ernest Lanigan. One difference between the lists is that Babe Ruth is ranked third by Baseball-Reference, but seventh by MLB, which does not count Ruth's 224 RBI compiled before 1920. Cap Anson's run amounts are different depending on source and what hits are included in various leagues he played in. Starting with Harry Stovey passing Charley Jones in August 1885, there have been seven changes of the career home run leader. Stovey held the title twice, having lost it to Dan Brouthers in June 1887 and then regaining it from Brouthers in August 1889.

Once the 2022 playoffs are complete, we’ll be publishing an article about the updated leaderboard. Way back in the day, MLB teams heading to the playoffs meant they went directly to the World Series. As the league has expanded over the years, though, so have the playoffs. MLB's official list does not include RBIs accumulated before 1920, when runs batted in became an official statistic.
There were expanded playoffs in 2020 because of the pandemic-shortened season, as well. But now with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in place for 2022 and beyond, the postseason field will expand from 10 to 12 teams. From 1899 through 1917, Sam Crawford, the all time triples leader, set the Major League record for most in-the-park home runs with an amazing career total of fifty-one. Through the 2022 season, these are the active players with at least 850 RBIs. As of 2022, Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera are the only active players among the top 15 in career RBIs.

Kiner's seven consecutive titles from 1946 to 1952 are also the most consecutive home run titles by any player. Barry Bonds is MLB’s all-time (and single-season) home run king, but it’s not like he’s the only dude with a crown. If we only look at MLB’s career home run leaders, it’d leave out lots of players that had powerful tenures in the big leagues.

The following is a chronology of the top ten leaders in lifetime home runs in Major League Baseball. In his 22-year career, the Say Hey Kid smacked 660 homers, the most among center fielders. Ken Griffey Jr. came close to that mark but ultimately fell short, finishing with 630. Kent, Robinson Canó and Rogers Hornsby are the only three players to hit 300-plus homers while playing at least two-thirds of their games at second base.
